javornice_znak In the Podorlické hills, near Rychnov nad Kněžnou, in the direction of Rokytnice v Orlických horách, lies the village of Javornice (at 420 m). The earliest record of this picturesque village at the foot of the Mountains was made sometime between the years 1344 and 1350 under the direction of Archbishop Arnošt of Pardubice. The village was devastated a number of times, most severely by the Swedes in 1636 and by a great flood in 1801. Nevertheless, it always revived and continued to provide a safe background for its inhabitants. A notable person living in the village from 1925 was Vojtěch Sedláček, a painter and graphic artist. He used to travel around Javornice in a horse-drawn barouche and reproduce his impressions from the lovely landscape in his paintings. He was a recognised painter and also a popular figure, living in harmony with nature and the people. In 1980, a memorial and an art gallery was opened in Javornice to demonstrate the work and way of life of Vojtěch Sedláček and his wife Marie, an artist and lace maker. The exhibits also include examples of the work of Josef Korejz –Blatinský, an ethnographer, painter and chronicler. You will get a superb view of the countryside, which not only artists find enchanting, when you stop at the highest point of the village, Jahodová (Strawberry) Mountain (502 m). It is good to visit Javornice when there are exhibitions, theatre performances or horse riding events. Note St. George’s Church of 1787, stone sculptures and reconciliation crosses. On your way, you may happen to hear the sound of lovely voices. That would be the singing of the whirling fairies of the Javornice forest. But there is no need to worry, they would not want to dance you to death as they are patrons of this large village at the foot of the Orlické Mountains.javornice_x
